Faith in Place is a Chicago-based nonprofit that empowers Illinois people of all faiths to be leaders in caring for the Earth. When they first contacted Prosper Strategies, the organization was making significant progress in its four program areas: (Energy & Climate Change, Sustainable Food & Land Use, Water Preservation and Advocacy) but lacked the strategic focus on marketing and consistency in messaging they needed to get to the next level. They chose to participate in Changemaker Marketing Lab One-on-One and worked with our consultants to refine their brand messaging, build a marketing plan and learn how to put it into action.
In the first months of our engagement, Prosper Strategies worked with Faith in Place’s president and other leadership to re-evaluate and refresh the organization’s mission, vision, values, point of difference, stakeholder profiles and key messages. While the organization already had most of these elements in place, they did not adequately describe the breadth of Faith in Place’s work or the depth of its impact.
Next, we collaborated with the Faith in Place team to design a marketing plan aligned with their goals and mission. Like many nonprofits, Faith in Place has a small marketing team, and needed a marketing plan that would be both impactful and achievable with limited resources. We used our Priority Planning Framework to ensure that the tactics recommended in the marketing plan could be executed with the budget and time the organization had available. We also developed a clear marketing schedule to guide the team’s work.
With their brand messaging platform and marketing plan finalized, Faith in Place was eager to move from ideas to action. However, there were several tactics suggested in the plan that the marketing team was less familiar with, such as scheduling social media posts and developing a guest blogging schedule. Prosper Strategies provided hands on training and capacity-building sessions for the team, targeting these tactics and the tools required to execute them.
We approach every Changemaker Marketing Lab engagement with a keen focus on measuring marketing success, and our work with Faith in Place was no different. In the marketing plan, we worked with the team to establish goals and measurable objectives. Our intention was to help the team clearly determine which marketing efforts were most and least successful so that they could make better investments of time and resources in the future. Then, in the Deliver phase of our engagement, we continued to meet with Faith in Place on a semi-regular basis to ensure they were fully supported in the realization of the marketing plan we built together. These meetings included a regular review of metrics and assessment of the organization’s progress toward goals.
Since participating in Changemaker Marketing Lab, Faith in Place has launched and continued to maintain an active blog and social media presence, and engages donors and supporters regularly via email marketing. Because of our unique insight into the organization’s brand, Prosper continues to assist Faith in Place on a project basis.
