In this webinar from September 2019, president of Prosper Strategies Alyssa Conrardy sat down with the CEO of YWCA Chicago Dorri McWhorter for a conversation around nonprofit marketing and communications advancing equity.
The two began by addressing the issues of stereotype porn — any type of of communications, be it written, photographed or filmed, which exploits the condition of a group that experiences disadvantages in order to generate the necessary sympathy for increasing support and charitable donations for a cause. Alyssa and Dorri discussed the five steps for moving beyond this and advancing equity.
Dorri spoke to how YWCA moved away from this sort of messaging in order to take a strength-based approach to their communications strategy. Through this, they were able put together a plan to improve diversity, equity and inclusion with the organization and for those that they serve.
